love is a four-letter word

Reborn - Yamamoto CHIBITA
Certain branches of law are nastier, evil semes than the rest. ONE IN PARTICULAR isn't just formidably huge, but also exhausts you from just taking it all in keeping up with it, and worst of all... the experience really isn't that great. And the worst part is? It is absolutely essential to becoming a practising lawyer.

But the one good thing about it is that EVERYTHING ELSE seems good and bright and wonderful in comparison, and because of it I rediscovered Melee's Built to Last. It was playing on the radio in my brother's room, and my legislation-saturated mind picked up on first few lovely notes of the opening, and LOVE AT FIRST SOUNDBITE, YEAH? It got me thinking about my favourite music videos about love, and so!

FAVOURITE LOVE SONG MTVS!
Chosen according to style, unique concept, and of course, sheer MELTS WITH HAPPINESS factor.

(1) Dashboard Confessional, Stolen (MTV)

Before the gold and the glimmer have been replaced
Another sun soaked season fades away
You have stolen my heart

This is one of my absolute favourite songs about love is Dashboard Confessional+'s Stolen - to me, that's a song that captures the feeling of first falling in love. And the video, at moments, reminds me of a modern-day version of Edward Norton's The Illusionist (card games! love! magic! childhood romance!), and I love it because I think love's a kind of magic. (also, the shot at 2.28minutes is an absolutely arresting shot of the lead actress. to me, at least).

Stolen is also my Thief King!Bakura song (even though that is neither here nor THERE) for ANOTHER YGO fanmix of DOOM that will be made someday: Pharaoh Atem/Thief King Bakura/High Priest Seto. THE THIRD THREESOME MIX, set in ANCIENT EGYPT. XD

(2)Melee, Built to Last (MTV)
I've looked for love in stranger places,
but never found someone like you.
Someone whose smile makes me feel I've been holding back,
and now there's nothing I can't do.

'Cause this is real, and this is good.
It warms the inside just like it should,
but most of all it's built to last.

'Cause you are the sun in my universe,
considered the best when we've felt the worst
and most of all it's built to last
.

While a fair bit of the video is the conventional (though very sweet) twentysomething heterosexual couple that's the staple visual fodder for every and any pop song about love, I love the little touches in the video! Check out the gay cowboys 2.10 minutes into the video! When I saw it, I was BROKEBACK SHOUTOUT! ♥

(3) Ronan Keating, When You Say Nothing At All (MTV)

While I am not so hot about the song, the video (even if it is shameless Notting Hill advertisement, is FABULOUS. It's full of text/subtext, the whole dichotomy between appearance/what someone's really thinking. I love the whole concept of the video so much - it would be #1, except for the fact that I REALLY am NOT so into this song. My favourite scene in it is heartwrenching (to me, for I am a sap), and it is the two women walking side-by-side, and one thinks, "I love my Darren" and the other woman thinks, "I love her Darren." omg < / 3 , but so good.

If there are any love songs/videos you think particularly interesting, do feel free to share them! ♥

And since this is a post about portrayals of ♥ in the media, have quotes from Love Actually (oh my God, I know I'm a sap for loving this movie so much). My favourite quote is this one (because I imagine there aren't many people who haven't been there at some point and totally understood that feeling):

So Daniel (played by Liam Neeson) is a widower whose wife has passed away from a terminal disease, and Sam is his grade-school son who's fallen in love. So this is father-son LET'S TALK ABOUT love in a TOTALLY AND WONDERFULLY REAL (and un-real) AND LAUGHABLE GUY WAY.

Daniel (Liam Neeson! ♥): So, let's go. We can definitely crack this. Remember, I was a kid once, too. So come on, it's someone at school, right?
Sam: Yeah.
Daniel: Aha, good, good. And what does she - he^ - feel about ya?

Sam: *She* doesn't even know my name. And even if she did, she'd despise me. She's the coolest girl in school and everyone worships her because she's heaven.

Daniel: Good. Good. *sits on the couch next to Sam*

Daniel: Well... *grins* Basically, you're fucked, aren't you?

^ I love you Daddy for being so open as to consider that your son could be in love with another boy, and being so open about it! ♥

+ Especially amazing, considering that Dashboard Confessional was also behind Vindicated, the ultimate ANGST HATE HATE HATE Harry Osborn song, off the Spider-man soundtrack.

Vindicated's my House song, though, 'cause it goes, "I am selfish, I am wrong, I am right, I swear I'm right, swear I knew it all along". THAT one's for the House FST. XDXDXD Which will be the HAPPIEST IN-CHARACTER HOUSE MIX EVER I PROMISE YOU (I will try not to break canon too much, but NO PROMISES). ♥ My House angst meter is BROKEN from too much canon. NO MORE ANGST NO MORE ANGST. At least not if I have a say in it!

What do you mean, another one? It's exams! I NEED MUSIC TO SURVIVE!

So basically, law's that strutting wannabe seme middle-management salaryman you have to screw so you can get the good ending with the real hot head of the corporation at the end, eh?

Then you find out he's never winnable and you endured a horrible fuck for nothing

Oh, I <3 Love Actually, it's totally my holiday sweetheart film to watch. My favorite love story was...hm...I think the prime minister's was really funny XD. That was probably the best. And then the one with the author, that was very cute too.

I'd like to hear Vindicated, if you have it? ^_^
29th-Nov-2007 09:37 am (UTC) - YOU'RE MY VICODIN ♥
*beams* I'm so happy you want to hear Vindicated! I LOVE THAT SONG! Here you go: Vindicated, by Dashboard Confessional! ♥ I JUMP AT ANY CHANCE I HAVE TO SHARE IT.

Then you find out he's never winnable and you endured a horrible fuck for nothing
... HAVE I TOLD YOU LATELY THAT I LOVE YOU? Because I haven't, ILU. ♥ AND I SHOULD TELL YOU EVERY DAY BECAUSE THAT'S HOW MUCH I EMIT HEARTS AT YOU. ♥

Law sometimes does feel like a VERY DISSATISFYING BL GAME, YES XD

! ! ! ♥ I AM SO HAPPY YOU LOVE LOVE ACTUALLY! ♥ You're right, it totally is a holiday sweetheart film! XDXDXD I would have thought it too sappy for you, but OMG I'M SO HAPPY YOU LIKE IT. ♥

I found the author love story hilarious, too, especially when all their signals kept crossing but they STILL LOVED EACH OTHER OMG. I loved the part where he fell into the lake, and he was, "I HOPE THERE ARE NO EELS IN HERE!" and at the same time, she was exclaiming in Portuguese, "CAREFUL! There are eels in here!" And oh oh oh when he proposed, it was so CUTE:

"Beautiful Aurelia, I've come here with a view of asking you to marriage me. I know I seems an insane person - because I hardly knows you - but sometimes things are so transparency, they don't need evidential proof. And I will inhabit here, or you can inhabit with me in England."

And she learnt English for him, "just in cases". omg LOVE.

I thought the love triangle between Keira Knightley, her husband, and her husband's best friend was brilliant! Because of the whole standing-outside-her-window with the flashcards thing! ♥

Have you ever watched The Holiday, with Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet and Jack Black? That's a literal holiday sweetheart film, but I actually really loved it!
29th-Nov-2007 06:14 am (UTC)
OMG. Now that you say it, Vindicated ABSOLUTELY is THE House character song. O_O.

I stole Stolen, (>.> I did not expect that to come out this way, but since it did... >.>) thanks!
29th-Nov-2007 09:38 am (UTC)
IT IS, ISN'T IT?~! It is so PERFECT FOR HIM. THAT IS WHY IT IS GOING INTO MY HOUSE FST. I AM SO GLAD you agree! ♥

XDDDD I AM SO AMUSED THAT IT CAME OUT THAT WAY! You're most welcome! Glad you gave it a try, hope you liked! ;)
29th-Nov-2007 10:09 am (UTC)
IT IS IT IS! It's PERFECT! <3

I DID! I liked it so much, it's been on repeat for a while now. >_<;; XD
29th-Nov-2007 06:41 am (UTC)
ALSO! OMG, ISN'T THAT NUMBER 13 IN THE STOLEN MTV?! O_O
29th-Nov-2007 09:39 am (UTC)
omg #13? I am so sorry, I don't get it T_T Tell me how it's significant again? *colours*
29th-Nov-2007 10:08 am (UTC)
House, Season 4, where he's got this whole troop of doctors in the game for a position on his team? There's a pretty brunette girl (let's face it, if they're not pretty, he didn't even consider hiring them, as Wilson says) in there, whose name had not been revealed, and she's only known as Number 13. I think it's the same girl in the video? Lol.
29th-Nov-2007 06:51 am (UTC)
Isn't the tout in You Say It Best Robbie Williams? ... Well, it sure looks like him XD

And OMG I ♥ Vindicated especially during that period when I was so depressed... I had it on repeat ad infinitum and somehow it made me feel better. And OMG it keeps reminding me of Boromir coz there's this AMV for Boromir and they used Vindicated and so the two are forever linked in my brain... which is good XD
29th-Nov-2007 09:43 am (UTC)
XDXDXD! I thought it was Robbie Williams when I first saw it, too, but I don't think it is. Wish it were, though, it would be so cool.

I hug you for depressed periods! *HUGS TIGHT, TRIES TO LOVE IT AWAY* I used to listen to this song when I was really angry. We use the same song for AUDIOTHERAPY? *loves*

XD I know what you mean about AMV-linked songs! I first heard Frou Frou's Holding Out For A Hero on a KKM Yuuri/Wolfram and Yu-Gi-Oh AMV, so I've always associated that song with that video, and not Shrek 2. ;)
29th-Nov-2007 10:14 am (UTC)
And now, having watched the Melee MTV, I believe that there is aare shoutouts to quite a few of the 'great' romantic movies... like Ghost, Titanic and Love Actually and others that I probably couldn't name coz I don't watch romantic movies that often XD

Hehe now I always emagineimagine emo!Boromir when I hear this song (if I'm not using it for audiotherapy [XD new phrase FTW!]).

Yay! *snuggles back* I always get depressed around exam time, so the timing is just nice... can't wait for Friday! And skating!!!
29th-Nov-2007 07:04 am (UTC)
*patpat* Which branch? Jurisprudence? Company?
29th-Nov-2007 09:40 am (UTC)
Sob, it is a branch of law against which Jurisprudence and Company Law look like beautiful ANGELS OF not-choking-on-statutes. ♥ It is a little like this, except EVEN LESS EXCITING.

Might you be thinking of becoming a lawyer? ♥ < / law fangirl >

Comparative Legal Traditions? Or just Civil Procedure/Evidence?

yup! trying not to flunk out of fourth year law school actually. >P
30th-Nov-2007 06:00 pm (UTC) - !!! THAT'S SO COOL!
Civil Procedure! *grin*

HEY! That means you and I were in the SAME LAW SCHOOL AND I NEVER REALISED IT?! D: TO THE NTH DEGREE WHY DID I NOT KNOW! We were in the same campus until June of this year!

*pat pat!* I wish you all the best for the exams! Am so thrilled to find out that you're studying law, too! ... if you told me before, I apologise! But if there's anything you need to know, questions or anything else, just let me know! :)

The Stolen video makes me want to write bombastik romansu about card tricks and conmen and magic XDXDXD

I am irrationally fond of this song/video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjPVvP6jBEQ
29th-Nov-2007 09:29 am (UTC) - future IB theme suggestion? XDXDXD
XDXDXD I AM SO HAPPY TO HEAR IT! ;) I think a part of me was SUBCONSCIOUSLY HOPING THAT linking the video would inspire CREATIVE EFFORTS (namely of the literary kind!) ON THE PART OF OTHER PEOPLE! XDDDDD

AND PLEASE WRITE that bombastik romansu! :D :D :D You can even work it into the MAGICAL SHOUJO one if you want!

Card tricks and conmen and magic: I HAVE A BRIGHT IDEA! Make it the next imaginarybeasts theme! XD Since "Magic" is gonna be next month's, and "DECEPTION" for conmen sounds a little narrow... maybe "Disguises"? XDXDXD I was evil and had a w o n d e r f u l suggestion: make one of the future IB themes "Games"! And yes it is fandom-influenced, definitely, but games is an amazing concept. I was putting together FSTs and was shocked by how many game references there are in songs. Jewel's "Foolish Games", Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game", The Cardigans, "My Favourite Game" and OH my favourite Sandman book for content (not the art) is, "A Game of You". I love that book so much.

But basically! I meant to say it is a theme with MASS APPEAL, and should TOTALLY be one of the IB themes of the future. XD I will need to research for it like omg, but I would love to do it. XD

XDDDD THANKS FOR THE LINK! I love it, it looks like ANGRY BOMBASTIK LOVE SONG to me! Great name, GREAT SONG NAME: SO MUCH LOVE is a phrase I use A LOT on LJ! omg and the lyrics are TOTAL GORGEOUS. XD

... omg magic PEOPLE-APPARATING PIANO! Looks like the Hogwarts people took the idea of portKEY a little TOO SERIOUSLY...
29th-Nov-2007 10:07 am (UTC) - Re: future IB theme suggestion? XDXDXD
Hohoho, well,we have a theme coming up, uh, year after next (... yeah, I know XD) that should be Rogues and Scoundrels? XD It was supposed to be our PIRATE NINJAS THIEVES theme, but Conmen are also more than welcome? XD

And hey, you can write magic tricks for the next theme! IT QUALIFIEZZZ. Unless you specifically need it to be games related? XD

(I don't think it'll work as magic shoujo, because the imagery is influenced by The Illusionist/Stolen video, so uh, in my head the story looks like a hazy-eyed, slightly surreal film. Or something. XD But oh man, the research, aurgh XD)

AHAHA ANGRY BOMBASTIK LOVE SONG? I... thought it was pretty catchy and upbeat? XD In a R-R-R-ROCKOUT!!! way, but still. XD; Hee, the video is silly, but also kind of cute. XD
29th-Nov-2007 10:47 am (UTC)
You have the cutest icons. So perfect for so many things. XD

I see CLASHING METAL as angry! XDDDD IT SOUNDED a little aggressive in putting forward the LOVE: Like the football player who comes reeling back drunk from the victory game to yodel his love for you from three stories down. XD Or to batter down the walls around your heart with his MASSIVE SHOULDERS. Lovely song, though, thanks for linking!

omg yes the research! IT'S FUN, THOUGH. I do research for every IB theme I have an interest in, whether or not I eventually manage to COMPLETE the story or not. I read stuff I wouldn't otherwise read: I ended up reading Neuromancer for the cyberpunk theme, and Dean Koontz's Brother Odd series (three books so far) for the Ghost one. ;) GOOD FUN!

XDXDXD The problem with the next theme is that it's so HUGE AND WONDERFUL - I could write SO MANY STORIES FOR IT OMG. ♥ I almost want to have an IB AMNESTY WEEK so I can write all the stories I wanted to write/didn't finish for previous themes. I would have so loved to do the Fairy Tales one, except there was no headspace due to exams + assignment season workload.
29th-Nov-2007 11:08 am (UTC)
Sfoasndoa DASHBOARDD. Do you know the Used? Smother Me is <33 :D

Eek. Love Actually. It's an all time fave for me. ;^; I swear, it never gets old.
29th-Nov-2007 01:58 pm (UTC)
I don't actually know the Used, but I shall certainly try it out once I chance upon it! *beams*

DASHBOARD INDEED ♥ ONE TRUE LOVE *among many true loves, it's true, but STILL TRUE! XD

♥ You love that movie too? XDXDXD I'M SO GLAD ♥ I really cannot imagine anybody seeing that movie being able to NOT love the movie. ;)
29th-Nov-2007 12:15 pm (UTC)
Dashboard Confessional's Vindicated is definitely the perfect House song. X.x

Speaking of the Spiderman OST: Dean & Imola skating to Hero! Dressed up all Spiderman-y, too! xD (... I linked this before but I think you missed it and you SERIOUSLY NEED TO SEE THIS?)

Ryan Cabrera = ♥! I refused to listen to him for a while but I'm over it now... ;)

I can't believe you remembered that I'm not a big fan of Love Actually. Even I don't remember telling you that. O.o

... I just never gave it a chance, I guess. I thought it was too Brittish. You know, just another Keira Knightley movie. *hides!* I promise to give it a try if it's on TV around Christmas time, okay? I'd rather watch it with you, though! xD
29th-Nov-2007 01:54 pm (UTC)
Vindicated is perfect, though, isn't it? I AM SO HAPPY I CALLED THAT RIGHT. WHO SAYS one song used for one soundtrack can't be used for another? XDXDXD

OH OH RYAN CABRERA! I love his music because tinted_glass let me try some! I love "On the Way Down" and "40 Kinds of Sadness". AHA THAT VIDEO SO PERFECT. The girl's so cute, too!

XD I remember you're not a big fan of Love Actually because I WAS SO HORRIFIED that you were not a big fan of the movie. I am of the opinion that nobody who sees the movie could EVER not love it. XD It is so universal, that movie! EVERYBODY can relate to it, seriously, and you really really really should see it. XD

XD! A flyer came in for Christmas celebrations around my area! They mentioned Christmas decorations BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND and I just happened to think about how you were HERE last Christmas! Time really flies!

Oh! Cool! Thanks so much for the skating link, it's brilliant! The loading isn't good: I can't actually see them MOVE in the video because the streaming's so patchy, but I am so XDXDXD at the costumes! And choice of song! I APPROVE! Uniting two of my greatest loves! Spider-man and skating!
29th-Nov-2007 02:51 pm (UTC)
I really adore the music they use for House... Do you remember Christina Aguilera's Beautiful in that episode where Chase kissed a nine year old girl? xD At the end of the episode they had House's version of the song - I thought it was really touching.

40 Kinds of Sadness! *grin!* That's my favourite out of all the songs you ever introduced me to. It would be the Aerosmith song... but you didn't introduce me to that one. ;)

Here's True on YSI in case you haven't got it yet. I kind of avoided it like the plague at first (special_k_sg sent it to me... ^^;) but like I said, I'm over that now. It's too good of a song to avoid for the rest of my life. xD

Huh. Is it a new hobby of yours to get me to watch everything I specifically decided NOT TO WATCH? O.o AT LEAST I HAVEN'T WATCHED THOSE YGO ABRIDGED THINGIES YET. There's been a lot of people on MSN trying to get me to watch that lately, actually. Did YOU send them? ;)

TIME REALLY FLIES. Last year's Christmas was simply amazing. Thank you again. :') I can't say more or I will CRY.

I AM GLAD THE CHRISTMAS DECORATION WILL BE BACK, THOUGH. I'm really looking forward to the Christmas decoration at Wijnegem Shopping Center (where I work!). I noticed they were starting to get some of the stuff out of storage on my lunch break, but they have to wait til December 7th to put things up. NOT YOUR FAULT. But you know, Sinterklaas is on the 6th. *wink!*

... I should e-mail you about that. HEE.

OH! I am so sorry about the bad streaming! jetaimerai and chyama were able to see it just fine yesterday, so I assumed it would be okay for you as well. WHOOPS. You should be able to see their skating, though. It really was very good. I'll uhm... try to remember the program I used to rip the previous ones and get it up for you. SOON.
29th-Nov-2007 03:49 pm (UTC) - HERE IT IS.
30th-Nov-2007 06:09 pm (UTC) - EEEEEEEE THANK YOU SO MUCH
♥ Thank you so much! I'm so sorry for the trouble you had to go through to get it to me! ♥

Hee! Their ending pose reminds me of Chazz and Jimmy at the end of the I DON'T WANNA MISS A THING skate! Except facing the same way! ;) cute! ♥ Thanks for sharing this!
29th-Nov-2007 03:40 pm (UTC)
I like tort law. I've got a couple internships this coming january; excited as anything!

Also I love Melee's built to last. It is so <3.
30th-Nov-2007 06:02 pm (UTC) - I'm so happy to hear it! *beams*
You, too? *beams* I'm so happy to hear that you are/will be studying law! ♥ I personally find tort law delightful to learn about, but one hell of a creature to actually study and apply (not a big fan of problem questions). ;) Oh! Internships this January? *grin* That's great to hear! ;) Let me know where you're going maybe, if you want to, you might be in my firm! (I'm at edgeofdawn@gmail.com!)

Melee's Built to Last really is one of those enduring-romance songs! ;)
29th-Nov-2007 04:21 pm (UTC)

Love actually is my "I need a good cry" movie that breaks your heart a million times, but makes you so happy at the end.

And, I also watch it every Christmas season.
30th-Nov-2007 06:05 pm (UTC)
The "need a good cry" thing is making my inner Mokuba want to crawl into your version of Kaiba's lap to give Niisama a hug. *hugs you* I tend to not focus on the sad bits and focus on the happy!

! I haven't actually seen it for a long time... possibly due to the fact that I don't have a copy in my possession. But I will! ;)
