Behind That Devious Smile
Once in a while I like to wander around ebay looking at Abyss doujin (I admit, I do it to look at the prices, and fall over laughing), and also it is the closest thing there is to an English Abyss artwork search. I'm not so fond of looking at yahoo!Japan, the prices there are actually reasonable most of the time, and therefore it is more dangerous, and also, I could spend forever there. Still, if you want to, Abyss doujin on yahoo!Japan. Just checking the link turned up so much good doujin on the first page alone that I remember why I don't do this very often. Aren't chibi Luke and Guy adorable? And why are there already six Giraffe listings on the first page?

But today I chanced upon a very pretty Van/Guy doujinshi (to say I don't ship anything Van is a massive understatement, so this art was beautiful indeed) - blind summer fish. I thought it was a crazy name until I looked it up and found it was a song: almost as pretty as the art, and very appropriate, too:

Blind Summer Fish
Lyrics: Chris Mosdell/Maaya Sakamoto
Music: Yoko Kanno/Alexandr Borodin

Right now, those fingertips that grazed this cheek gently fortold
Of the day that will surely arrive when we will go our separate ways
In the limited amount of time how many more things will we give one another

blind summer fish Just beyond my nose right close to me, your breath, while sensing it
blind summer fish So dear, so heartrending
I want you now, I entrust everything to you
A gravity the same as the passions that were equally attracted, that moment we met one day
Is trying to lead the destination of the two of us to separate locations
Although this may have been predetermined before our births
blind summer fish Enough tenderness to fill both arms, carrying them you will
blind summer fish Pull me close in an embrace so
With just that I can go on living again today
Is there such thing as a love that continues forever

blind summer fish Just beyond my nose right close to me, your breath, while sensing it
blind summer fish So dear, so heartrending
I want you now, I entrust everything to you

And coincidentally, while on a search for this song, I found this: poetry. I'd forgotten how much I loved poetry. And I found this poem:

Thunder fell. Winds gather
Dancers running in the hills.
The young branch in my hand
Turns suddenly to ash.
A black echo knocks about in the abyss.
The star is blind, the star is old.
Dryad's feet in the tree's hands
Flame with a blue flame.

Interesting doujin finds of the day:

This hilarious Kratos and Lloyd one. This one takes the cake, though - it's Genis/Kratos.

And the most eyebrow-raising item of the day for the price alone: this Asch anthology that's US $69.99, without shipping. Even for an anthology, that's US $1 per page.

Asch: "Because I'm worth it."
Me: ... you know, if you keep that up I'll write Mieu/you next.
Asch: "Like that's any worse than what you ordinarily write."

moonythestrals, to my great joy, wrote Conrad/Wolfram fic. *GRIIIN* My love for this series will never die. (Also, very pretty Supernatural layout). Which reminds me that now that I know Supernatural I shall go back and read all her fic.

And yep, this is what I do when taking a break from this. Hail the Hague Convention, and all that.

i like wandering around ebay to look at abyss doujin too.

then it gets depressing when i find a really nice guy/luke one that i'd never be able to get, because sadly, my mom does know what the word "yaoi" means.

just you people wait until i'm 18. DX

23rd-Feb-2007 04:56 am (UTC)
XDDD ME TOO! XD Although I find that there isn't very much Abyss doujin in ebay - compared to how much there is on yahoo!Japan. I always like wandering around ebay and reaquainting myself with the value of MONEY.

*griin* How much do I love that you love Guy/Luke. ♥

I'M WAITING XDDDDD HEHEH. I wonder what you'll be into then.

Yeah, that one really threw me for a loop. I had to find that link and link it to SHOW THE WORLD that's how much Abyss is worth. 0__0 Or how much people THINK it's worth.

also, re: mood

23rd-Feb-2007 05:10 am (UTC)
But I've only been awake for three or so hours... Heh. And I could sleep forever sometimes.
23rd-Feb-2007 05:02 am (UTC)
I've seen a few Abyss doujins for $99-100. D:
23rd-Feb-2007 05:12 am (UTC)
I knew I was saving the first time I used OTL for a moment like this.

WHOA. I thought that kind of pricing only happened with FF7 doujin.

Ha, forget embezzlement and other forms of lucrative wrongdoing! It's clear that one can make millions from doujinshi resale - perfectly legitimately!

That's a really beautiful poem <3 I always did love playing with imagery and words.

Ack, Hague Convention? x_X You know what, given the amount of writing you do, I think I'd take problem sets any day, as damnably hard as they can sometimes be. Maybe when I do patent law, I'll just draw shiny bomb circuits and try to distract them with the pretty.
23rd-Feb-2007 05:59 am (UTC)
One of my favourites has got to be the first poem:

He comes across the granite yard,
Grizzled feather glint in his black wings.
He strokes the tree, the water and the cat,
Glances at the mirror of the day.

The clock counts out the time for the living,
A spider hangs his web among the stars,
And the angel, having entered the hearth,
Turns into smoke, ashes, embers.

So beautiful. It reminds me of how much I love beautiful imagery, and I don't see that often in the books I read. *grin* Imagery, I've always thought, is one of the most beautiful arts a writer can learn. I was reading an article about a music producer in TIME the other day, and he said that lyrics-wise, he could fix anything, but the one thing he couldn't fix was a lyrics writer with no grasp of metaphor. It's a compelling thought.

*grin* I should be doing MORE writing! The Hague Convention I'm doing needs an interpretive document. *glares at it* I honestly do think lawyers write these things so that laymen would need to hire more of them just to understand what they meant.

It's quite fascinating reading draft legislation and the comments on them. The Japanese ones are so dramatically polite in comparison to everyone else's.

*griiin* Draw shiny bomb circuits and patent that design! ;) I'd love to hear what you think when you do patent law. xD lots of brilliant fic ideas, and if you're still into House then, lots of medical and drug-related cases, too. ;)

Hooyeah, Genis/Kratos does indeed take the cake. Oh, crackola...

It's been ages since I've found fanart for that pairing, come to think of it. Yeah, MORE EXISTS OUT THERE...
23rd-Feb-2007 05:53 am (UTC)
It is just that when I think Genis/Kratos this image pops into my mind:

I have yet to find anything more surprising than Genis/Kratos, but I do suppose I will find it someday. Genis/Zelos, maybe.

And there's MORE Genis/Zelos out there? HEHEH. Three cheers for doujinshi and fanart- it's a way of thinking which even ff.net cannot attain - with art, too!

*grin* I recognise Maaya Sakamoto (but then I think only 2% of anime fans who knew anything about seiyuu wouldn't) but I'm not so familiar with Yoko Kanno's work. But then again I put it down to the fact that I pay almost zero attention to female seiyuu, and the only one I really care about is Saiga Mitsuki, and that's because she voiced one of my favourite characters of all time, Wolfram. XD

*grin* I'm glad you liked this! ;) And heh, one of my housemates studied with Japanese music because she didn't get distracted by the words then. Although Japanese music is more curious than any other music I've known - I honestly don't see how "blind summer fish" relates to anything in that song!

*grin* Dear, I think you're great with imagery, if what I've seen of your writing is anything to go by. (And you should write more. ♥) That line about the young branch turning to ash is very lovely, and actually also fits Tales of the Abyss disturbingly well. xD It's not my favourite poem there, although it's one of the poems I like best. xD

You're online!!!!!

(I love how we're both raiding ebay and YahooJP today.)

Speaking of KKM fic, this is the one I wanted to rec to you. Not your usual KKM fic, but oh so pretty *_*
23rd-Feb-2007 06:05 am (UTC) - HEEEE :)))) *radiates happy at you*
THAT I AM!! XDDD It's what I do when I shouldn't be leaving the house. I notice that around assignment/exam time I tend to post a whole lot more than I ordinarily do. xDD

Although I wonder what you're looking for! XD The Abyss section of yahoo!JP is already heartbreaking (and sometimes brainbreaking too!) that I haven't yet ventured outside of it. Yahoo!JP is the most seductive place on earth. D:

!!! Thank you so much! *beams* I hadn't read that story before - the Greta story I'd read was a little like this but had very different execution. Nice one! ;) And thank you once again for the link! I'll read any and every KKM fic. :D ... it's just that I will more readily read some than others. XD

Oh how I love your icon ♥

Asch: "Because I'm worth it."
Me: ... you know, if you keep that up I'll write Mieu/you next.
Asch: "Like that's any worse than what you ordinarily write."

DO IT >D Rofl. Would you cry if I told you I was thinking about Mieu x Luke some other day? XD

@_@ T_T Abyss doujin.... I'm not into anything Van cept for the Van/Luke that gets thrown in my face daily when I progress with the game >O But that doujin sure is pretty ;__;

XD I need to restalk all your entries now I'm into the fandom
23rd-Feb-2007 06:29 am (UTC)
I actually have a perfect icon for the day I write Mieu/Asch. !!!!!!

Would you cry if I told you I was thinking about Mieu x Luke some other day?
I would actually REJOICE. ♥ I embrace Mieu/Luke. :D :D :D Although I've seen a lot of Mieu/Guy. :D

Me: :D
Asch: ... not that she ever needs encouraging. *goes off to sulk in a corner*

Me either! I'm really really not into Van at all, and that would still not cover it. But that doujin was so pretty, and I admit I followed it because I'd never seen any Van/Guy doujin and I wanted to see one. it's so very pretty. And the artwork in it looks great, too!

EHEHEHEH ;) Just the way I stalk yours now that you're into Abyss! ♥ I usually tag quite compulsively, so following the abyss tag should do the trick. ;)

No, not at all, don't feel bad about it! I wouldn't have learned about yahoo!Japan without other people around. And actually, to my way of thinking, it's only the price that makes ebay so prohibitive. There's a lot that's good about it - language, for one thing, that's incomparable, and it's set out pretty well. Another thing is that the majority of yahoo!Japan sellers don't ship outside Japan, requiring most doujin buyers to go through doujin agencies like Rinkya (just in case you're interested in looking into it). And the middlemen charge commission, too. I just look for the pretty art without much of a mind to buying (because once I'd started I'd never stop. xD)
23rd-Feb-2007 06:03 am (UTC)
That doujinshi is GORGEOUS...I find it hard to like Van, but I would honestly buy Van x Guy/Luke/Asch if the artwork was good.
But...the price scares me. That eBay seller sometimes has good prices on her doujin...other times she overcharges (she is the one I spoke of earlier that does $45 per hour to translate doujin). She is selling one that I want really badly, though, and it's Van x Luke, Van x Asch, Asch x Luke, too. But it's $35. t.t It's Lust to Lust- with Asch and Luke naked on the cover. Scary thing is that she is charging $35 for a 22p doujin. Holy crap...

Amazing! A Sakamoto and Kanno collaboration? They worked on another song I adore called "Here." The lyrics are so lovely...
That's an interesting poem, though. :o

I saw that Asch anthology, too! But...while $70 is too much for ANY doujin...at least the page count is reasonable...where as the one I mention earlier is $35 for 22p. D:

And, whoa, wait...Conrad x Wolfram? That's an interesting pairing, well, it's not BIZARRE, but interesting. Reminds me...I need to finish that series.

23rd-Feb-2007 06:43 am (UTC)
It is! I took one look at it and I was Wow, if it didn't cost so much I'd buy it, and me not being a Van fan or a Van/Guy fan at that! *grin* I'll go for anything with good art, really. And if it's really good art, I'd buy anything. HEHEHEH, I'm with you on the Van X Guy/Luke/Asch, although if it was Van/Guy/Luke/Asch I just might buy it for the HELL of it. xD

Also that one's $30 for 14 pages. I first encountered this seller when looking for Basch/Batlhier doujin, and she had good prices on one particular one I wanted for a friend, actually, so I had a generally positive impression. But wow. I still think $45/hour is insane, and that doujin should be charged per page or per sentence. How would you measure how efficiently someone was working in a unit of time?

The ebay seller than unsettles me more than a little is this one, actually. The base cost of the doujin I can understand, but I don't see why she charges US $16 for shipping.

!! I just saw Lust to Lust today! *grin* HEHEHEH. I think it has great art. But yep, that price - is pretty discouraging. Do you buy mostly off ebay? I thought you might be going through a doujin buyer like Rinkya.

I've just come to realise that a lot of Abyss doujin are named for songs: I wonder if hemisphere was named for this song, because its lyrics are:

Even so, what can I possibly do?
What can I do to change this tiny box-garden reality?
I haven't even lived half of my life;
rebelling against, and embracing others -
These experiences are being tattooed onto my subconscious.
When I was stood on the edge of a cliff,
"Adversity" grabbed my arm,
and for the first time, I could see where I was.

I'm just heading towards a world which I can't even imagine.
Tell me, what is the definition of "strength"?
Does it mean to hurt yourself,
or perhaps to throw yourself away to protect someone who you should protect?

It looks like I've already walked out of the desert of my beginnings, alone.
I want to remain as myself till the day I turn to ash.

This song here? *grin* I should listen to more Sakamoto songs, really. *grin*

xD I just picked the poem with abyss in it - it turned out most of it seemed to fit Asch well, too. xD

*grin* I think the most astronomical prices come from Final Fantasy 7 doujin. Unbelievable. The most amazing part is that people pay. xD

Heheh, I think $70 is too much, too. If I see something like that I'd just obsessively go surf fansites and make up for not being able to get it. xD

HEH HEH HEH. Asch as a L'Oreal ad.

*grin* I'm quite fond of Conrad/Wolfram myself, although my one true love will always be Yuuri/Wolfram. ;) I actually need to finish that series, too - some part of me never wanted it to end. *smiles*

Oh yes. 'blind summer fish' is done by Alstoremeria, who does INCREDIBLY beautiful stuff. I posted one of her Guy/Asch doujin on my journal a while back and it's so terribly sad. <3 Her notes for the blind summer fish doujin was that the song was her Van/Guy song. XD

That doujin, among the Van/Guy one by SPIRAL, and the Hod!Van/Guy by Bone's House are totally on my most wanted list.
23rd-Feb-2007 05:40 pm (UTC) - (eep, my apologies!)
! You posted that one? I, er, think I can't see it - I may not be on the list. I saw where it's mentioned but I think I can't view the corresponding entry on your LJ (unless the post was on journalfen). My apologies! I would have loved to see it. (I was wondering how I could have missed it, heh). I'd - still love to see it, if you don't mind? My apologies again, for all the trouble...

*grin* When I read the blind summer fish lyrics I was Whoa, this song is perfect. It really is. So wistful and longing and yet resolute, somehow. Fits canon perfectly, too.

! Thank you for the links! Will investigate them gleefully! XD The recommendations are much appreciated. *smiles*
23rd-Feb-2007 10:43 am (UTC) - dude, where's my cage?
And the most eyebrow-raising item of the day for the price alone: this Asch anthology that's US $69.99, without shipping. Even for an anthology, that's US $1 per page.

The shipping is surprisingly cheap! *laughs* I mean, woah that's disgusting! xD

Buying LPS on Ebay has given me a severe allergy of it. *g* They ask $20 for something that costs $3 in the stores! =/

The Hague? O.o Why do they need to rename everything! *headdesk*
23rd-Feb-2007 05:43 pm (UTC) - Mieu looks wide-eyed at Lady! He don't know where the cage is, desu no!
HEHEHEH. I know some sellers who charge the doujin cheap but kill on the shipping. And really, anyone who pays $69.99 for a doujin probably won't complain that much about shipping. xDD I mean, what's $16 when you've already spent $69.99? ... but then again that's just me - by the time I got the point where I'd happily spend that money on doujin I probably wouldn't be that picky about shipping.

I KNOW D: Some places, Abyss manga costs $17 on ebay when it really costs about half that, even if you buy in the US! INSANITY.

XDDD Why, what do they call it in Belgium? I saw the odd document or two written in Belgish(XD) and one or two written for Belgium. Nice. ;) If I could understand the language.
24th-Feb-2007 02:20 am (UTC)
hehe i know that seller happyhooper we're actually good online friends <3 her collection is massive @_@ i can't believe how much she has XD i've bought quite a bit from her as well <3

you know if you want anything from yahoo japan hun I'm willing to buy you a book or two no biggie <3 that's where i get almost all my asch and luke books i actually just bought another anthology for them XD

24th-Feb-2007 04:50 am (UTC)
Heh, it's pretty amazing to know you know her! The online world is tiny. I haven't had much occasion to interact with her, but she was quite nice when I emailed her to ask about whether she might have a certain FF7 doujin in stock.

*laughing* If her store is that comprehensive, I can imaginer her personal collection must be pretty staggering. *grin*

*beams!* Thank you so much for your lovely offer! *smiles* I wish I could get you something in return, but there probably isn't anything I've got that you don't already have! *grin* That's really kind of you - thank you so much! *beams*

Another anthology?! *griiin* Aren't you lucky? *smiles* ;) Man, if I'm this happy from just looking at your collection, it must feel even better to own it. ;) I wish we were in the same country so I could lend you my scanning services. *laughing*
25th-Feb-2007 09:18 pm (UTC)
You tempt me D:D But I've sworn to myself that I will be buying no more doujinshi for a while xD
25th-Feb-2007 09:30 pm (UTC)
everytime i read your journal I feel like levelling Asch the Paladin. : (
