Reborn - Yamamoto CHIBITA
I simply must share with you (as linked by kotomine, here): the most beautiful work of copyright infringement I have ever had the joy of setting my gaze on. It's a MTV by a Korean singer that takes absolutely breathtaking liberties with Final Fantasy: Advent Children. I was grinning from ear to ear while watching it. ♥ Ordinarily I'd be happily dissecting how and why that's an infringing work, but in this case I just watched it in complete ♥ bliss ♥. IT DOES NOT EVEN NEED TO BE EXPLAINED.

Here's the official Square Enix press release ("the Company's intellectual property ... is one of our most crucial resources"), but my favourite news article title? Square Enix Summons a Final Fantasy Lawsuit. This part made me laugh the hardest:

"Understandably, Square Enix cast level 100 lawyer magic on the video maker Fantom Entertainment, for half-inching their IP. Fantom was fined $10,900 after the Seoul Central District Court judge Gu Hoe-geun ruled that they had "illegally used 80 percent of the storyline, setting, characters and their styles of dress and their demeanours from video game Final Fantasy VII."

... how did they decide on the figure of 80%?!

Why Your Job Is Like Working For The Mafia, Unwarranted Comparison #159: When your Boss goes missing, guess who has to take over?

Gokudera's face in the icon I'm using now accurately captures my inner expression when I was instructed to do something at work which no one had ever done before. I mean no one. Not the associate giving me work, not the two partners I work with most of the time. I Live In Interesting Times.

Gokudera's face in the icon I'm using now also captures without words the essence of Clothes Shopping Under Eve's Guidance, which can also be summarised succintly in the single word TOL - ER - ATE. (And me screaming. A lot. What do you mean I look good in this? Why can't I wear that? What do you mean green and purple bring out my colours? What do you mean this looks like couch fabric? ... But I like couch fabric...)

I do exaggerate, really. One of my greatest regrets in life is having reached my present age age and failed utterly to develop any interest in actively shopping for clothes (as opposed to, I seem to have worn everything in my closet for about several hundred times. Some of them are actually falling apart. I do believe it's time to acquire new ones), makeup, or shoes. Shopping for clothes is a little like tooth extraction for me, as both of them can be described as Necessary Evils, and both of whom I am inclined to view as unnecessary and occasionally mildly traumatic and putting one in dire need of painkillers.

So, as you might imagine, Eve really does have an uphill task with me, and I do genuinely appreciate her advice (not to mention the actually bringing me into clothing stores, ordinarily places I do not voluntarily enter), all my kicking and screaming and endless protests notwithstanding.

At this juncture I feel it necessary to leave you with a quote from Lords and Ladies, by Terry Pratchett:

"The Monks of Cool, whose tiny and exclusive monastery is hidden in a really cool and laid-back valley in the lower Ramtops, have a passing-out test for a novice. He is taken into a room full of all types of clothing and asked,
Yo, my son, which of these is the most stylish thing to wear?

And the correct answer is: Hey, whatever I select."

Or if you are me, the correct answer would be, Whatever Eve selects.

ZOINK! I've seen that video ages ago...I never knew she got sued for it. I'll be damned, I thought it was practically the most awesome thing ever.
23rd-Mar-2008 03:28 pm (UTC)
I didn't even know about the video until the lawsuit! *facepalms self* Work makes me do things @$$-backward. I THINK ALSO THAT IT IS THE MOST AWESOMEST THING EVER. It makes both my trainee lawyer side and my fangirl side cry tears of joy and happiness. ♥ IT'S LIKE WHAT FANS THINK ABOUT DOING, IN THEIR HEADS, and the video is what happens when SOMEONE WITH MONEY FOR CG AND COSTUMES ACTUALLY GOES AND DOES IT!

... I want to go shopping with you! T__T!

I keep seeing these awesome outfits at WSC that I think you'd look great in, and they're probably your style...? xD I've been looking for a girly tie, too. B-but it's hard to find any. O.o; I swear it'd look really good with a white shirt (with black tiny stripes maybe? xD) and black trousers. OI CHRIS I WANT TO DRESS YOU UP LIKE A DOLL. A LAWYER DOLL.

W-would you believe me if I say I haven't gone shopping for clothes since I last saw you in person? xD Probably not, but it's true.
23rd-Mar-2008 03:16 pm (UTC)

... I think they're American. That explains everything. O.o;
23rd-Mar-2008 03:18 pm (UTC)
Don't flatter yourself dude. You're nothing in comparison to some other people I know. XDXDXD

Those jeans were totally an awesome buy. XD
23rd-Mar-2008 03:21 pm (UTC) - LOL HIIIIIII ~
XDDDDDD Dude, that kind of makes me HAPPY. ♥ I thought I carried on so. Thank you for the advice! ♥

Though I'm still gonna wonder why I own that purple top, but I plan to test it out soon!

THEY WERE. ♥ Omg, thank you so much! I just about never walk into the store we bought them from, so thank you for bringing us there! ♥

*sends you love, and and awful lot of it* ♥

I WAS WONDERING THE SAME THING! And thinking, they probably count every second in which FF-AC related influences are seen! Then I wonder how they deduce those similarities? Use of the actual scenes is a definite, but then there are the costumes, the replication of the fight sequences, etc. I couldn't help thinking I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO BE ABLE TO THINK THROUGH THAT, LEGALLY.

That MV is so old... I remember when it came out and I was wondering when they'd sue her company.
Randomly, I actually quite like that song.
23rd-Mar-2008 04:14 pm (UTC)
It is terribly old! So is the lawsuit, really, which was decided last year! But omg it'll never get old to me. ♥

*grin!* And you were right! The MV goes right past mere resemblance and straight into DIRECTLY SAMPLING AND REMAKING, PRETTY MUCH. Square Enix is preeeetty darn possessive about its IP rights, there's no way they'd let this slide!

*grin!* I find I enjoy the video better if I turn the sound off, but it's probably because I get less out of it than you do (not being able to understand the language, for one). ♥

Oh my...that is really good infringement!

You know how courts come up with 80%....They pulled that # out from thin air....like how they pull most apportionment numbers.

I remember once asking a judge guest speaker about how % apportionment were arrived at. The answer was "Whatever that feels right". So numbers out of thin air wins....
23rd-Mar-2008 09:26 pm (UTC)

When I see things like that I can't help but think that they're just trying to TAKE THE PISS, because, just. WHY. OMG *___________*

p/s: 80% is where the statisticians come in. ;)

My colleague is threatening to drag me shopping should I not give up my black and white wardrobe soon OTL I swear, I wouldn't survive working in an office environment for very long DX I have absolutely nothing to wear except black and black and maybe a little white. For suitable office clothes that is OTL

I don't doubt you'd look good in anything 8D

OMG THAT VIDEO WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! HOW CAN THEY SUE SUCH PRETTINESS? Awesome song, too. I adore how quite a bit of Asian music mixes in some English every now and then in their songs along with the Asian. I still have no clue what the meaning of the songs are, but I just love the uniqueness of it. But that vid? SO BEAUTIFUL!!!

And you are not alone in your hatred for clothes shopping (and make up, and shoes). I'm 24, and I still can't stand any of that stuff. Just the other day my parents were telling me that I need to grow up. Hmph! No amount of ordering me to grow up will make me develop an interest in make up and shoes, and I certainly will never enjoy the process of clothes shopping. NEVER!

I just LOVE that song! And I was trying to search for it , which ended in failure. I was hoping that sometime later I would see it again, and I did! *screams happily*
*ahem* Yes, I know a lot of people slammed the makers of that MTV, but I too enjoyed it. :P

Square Enix cast level 100 lawyer magic Oh LOL. Nice sense of humour!

Gokudera's face in the icon I'm using now accurately captures my inner expression when I was instructed to do something at work which no one had ever done before. I mean no one. Not the associate giving me work, not the two partners I work with most of the time. I Live In Interesting Times.
haha, must be scary to step into the unknown.

I don't really fancy shopping for clothes either, and my mum always drags me along and says that i need new clothes, cause I also wear the same stuff in my closet for... umm.. eons?
Good luck with finding new clothes! I just grit my teeth and count how many more pieces of clothing I need to try on before I can leave the store. :P

*goes back to squeeing at the MTV*

I immediately jumped at the reply button in order to start screaming, "OMG DISCWORLD REFERENCES" but then you went and flat-out quoted Pratchett, and now it's too easy. : (

Still, awesomeness abounds. Best of luck with your looming responsibilities. :]

I'm slow. I had a couple of browser windows open just to watch the video and reply to this afterwards when I had the energy and time to do so. I just did it, and it's lovely!

Makes me want to figure out a way to do something similar, but they probably used green-screen and plenty other things to do it.
